Blue Lagoon, Iceland 2023 guide

The famous Blue Lagoon is one of the ‘Wonders of the world’. The water in the Blue Lagoon contains minerals collected from the grounds’ lava. The milky blue water has a high content of silica, along with Algae and other natural salts. The silica forms soft white mud which you can often feel on the bottom of the Lagoon. The mask which you will be offered is a Silica Mud Mask and is cleansing on the skin. The water temperature is around 37–39 °C (99–102 °F) and as you swim around you will find hot spots to enjoy.

“Discover the waters of the Blue Lagoon. Journey through a spa of the volcanic earth. Harmonize with nature.”

Location

The Blue Lagoon is located in the southwest of Iceland, on the way to Reykjavik from Keflavik airport. Driving down Route 41, look out for a white sign with red writing on the highway and take the exit onto Route 43, Grindavíkurvegur. You will likely see steam rising from the Lagoon in the landscape.

Cost

*Comfort: from 50 EURO / Premium: from 70 EURO

Please note: you have to pre-book. I went with my sister (Nov 2019) and we paid around £75* for entrance at 15:00. It does vary, depending on when you go and the time of day. It’s costly, yes, but it’s the Blue Lagoon and well worth it.

Pros / Cons

  • It’s touristy but it does what it says on the tin and is not a letdown.

  • It’s pricey but worth it - once in a lifetime!!

  • They expanded it in 2018 so it’s double the size of when I first went in 2016 which means you can find a little corner of the Lagoon to yourself.

  • It is different from the other pools, it’s more like a spa really. Everyone gets a mask and drink at the swim-up bar.

  • They offer different packages and have added a much larger in-water massage area if you have opted to enjoy that too.

  • It does get busy but they do restrict entry numbers to time slots to help with this.

  • If you don’t like the idea of showering at a more local pool with everyone else then the Blue Lagoon is a little more private with shower cubicles.

  • If the weather isn’t great, that’s fine. The Blue Lagoon is great on a cloudy, misty day and only more atmosphere.

  • You either do it or you don’t - completely up to you. But there’s nothing quite like it.

How it works

Please note: The Blue Lagoon isn’t very young family-friendly and children under 2 years old are not permitted. Children under 8 years old will be asked to use the armbands provided. The Blue Lagoon can be very romantic (the Viking took me there on our first date). Having said that, kids would love it and it is a pretty unique experience.

Book online HERE

Easy to either drive yourself (free parking) or get an airport transfer

Check in and get a towel and wristband. The wrist band allows you access and you can bill drinks or snacks to it, pay later. Tap the wrist band on the central panel of the lockers, it will flash a locker number and open it for you. To lock your locker, close and tap the wrist band on the central panel again.

Showering is more private and you can try the Blue Lagoon products. Put a good handful of conditioner in your hair before going into the pool as the water can dry and frizz your hair. Wash before going into the Lagoon, wrap yourself in your towel, and head to the pool.

Leave your towel on a hook and head off to enjoy the Lagoon, swim around and find the sauna and steam rooms over beside the big waterfall.

Top tips

  1. Book ahead - I don’t think they let you just turn up. Aim to spend 1.5-2 hours in the Lagoon.

  2. It’s only 20mins from Keflavik airport and it is the perfect way to start or end a trip to Iceland

  3. If you want pictures of the Lagoon then go to the Park area (to the left of the entrance door) and walk around the landscape as it’s just the same but the water is cold. If you want pictures in the Lagoon then invest in a clear, waterproof bag/case for your camera or phone.

  4. Leave your jewelry off as the silica can discolour metals like silver (leave your glasses off too)

  5. Conditioner in hair - lots of it

  6. Drink and mask in the pool

  7. Swim around and visit the stream and sauna beside the waterfall

  8. Wear a hat - help me set the trend lol

  9. It can be very dehydrating so drink a lot of water after, and be ready with a snack

  10. Bring your own towel if you have room as everyone has the same white Blue Lagoon towel and so yours might go for a wander - I’m sure you could ask for another one though

Where to eat

There is a small cafe by the changing rooms on the Lagoon side so you can get a drink or snack and add it to your bill via your wrist strap. There is also a restaurant outside of the changing rooms, overlooking the Lagoon, so you can enjoy the view. At the end of the restaurant is a small outdoor space where you can pop through and take a selfie with the Lagoon in the background.

Exit through the gift shop

Cleverly designed, of course, the exit is through the shop but this means you can try out some of the products before you leave. There is also a shop at the airport too.
