When you get into multiplayer and change characters at the War Table you may notice that all of the characters are currently locked. This is because, to unlock all of the characters in Marvel’s Avengers, you need to reach specific points in the story where those characters become available. Once a character has been unlocked in story, they are also available to use in multiplayer modes.

  • Start the single player campaign
  • Progress through the campaign and complete the “House Call” Campaign Mission
  • Visit the War Table in multiplayer mode to unlock Iron Man as a character

Depending on whether or not you skip the cut-scenes, unlocking Iron Man can take a few hours. You need to follow the main story to the end point of the beta, which was the Snowy Tundra mission (where you unlock The Hulk). Once the Snowy Tundra mission is complete you have a HARM room challenge to complete with Ms. Marvel, playing as Iron Man.

After that mission you unlock the mission House Call, where Banner and Ms. Marvel visit Tony Stark. After this mission is completed, you will get a notification that Iron Man is now available to select from the Hero roster.
