The earliest place I started finding Stonewood was in Vanaheim. After about 8-12 hours into the game, you will head to Vanaheim with Freya. You have to lift her curse so she can travel between the realms again. During this level you can start finding Stonewood.
It’s most commonly found in the chests that you find off the beaten path. There are a lot of chests in this area that are blocked by mushroom plants. You cannot remove these when you first arrive but when you come to leave, you are able to remove them.
