Unfortunately, encountering specific enemies is not an exact science, so we’re simply sharing the techniques we found to encounter Lurkers across approximately 20 missions of testing. They are needed for three of the Alaska Study Objectives, requiring you to kill or interact with them in a specific way.

Where To Find Lurkers In Alaska In Rainbow Six Extraction

At first we thought just spawning in, scanning the area, and then leaving would be the quickest way, but that never appeared to work very well. We played across all difficulties and only occasionally fought against Lurkers. They can appear on any map in the Alaska region and on any difficulty, but we had the most luck on Cautious difficulty. In a large portion of the matches played on this difficulty the Lurkers appeared in Sub Zone three, so it’s not the quickest way, but there’s a good chance you will encounter them this way.

Once you’ve managed to find them, it’s important you keep them alive if you want to complete the Lurker objectives.

San Francisco brings with it new Study challenges to complete. This Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction San Francisco Studies Guide lists all of the different Study objectives in the San Francisco Hot-Zone as well as some tips and tricks on how to complete them quickly and efficiently.

Studies are a vital part of the game, they are on every map, including New York Study Objectives. The Development Milestone level of your account is how you unlock new Operators and unlock new maps to explore. Both your Operator level and your studies progression count towards your Development Milestone level, so it’s best to complete them as you unlock them.

Rainbow Six Extraction San Francisco Studies Guide

Studies In Defusal

  • Defused – Take down Breachers or Bloaters. You have to use your melee attack either from stealth or smoke grenade
  • Lookout – Ping an unalerted Breacher or Bloater with Up on the D-Pad
  • Stop Hitting Yourself – Kill enemies with Breacher explosions

Target Practice

  • Boom Specialist – Kill enemies with explosives. Unlock Claymores or similar tech and kill enemies with it. If you have unlocked Fuse, he is a good choice
  • Holo It’s Me – Customize a weapon and add a Holographic Sight then use it to kill enemies
  • Lethal Challenge 1 – Get 20 kills or assists in a single mission

Mid Performance

  • Stay Healthy – Complete an objective with at least 60% health

  • Intel Target 2 – Earn 25,000 XP. Playing on the next difficulty up and doing two objectives is usually quicker for similar XP

Caustic Buddies

  • Keep It Clean – Kill a Sludge (Small puddles of slime sometimes on the ceiling) before it multiplies. Use shotgun or explosives
  • Watch Your Step – Kill or assist on a Sludge without being hit
  • In The Walls – Shoot or Ping a Sludge on the ceiling

Coordination

  • Lethal Scanner – Scan an enemy before killing or assisting. Use Scan Grenades or Recon Drones
  • Dedicated Scanner – Scan 10 enemies in a single mission. Use Scan Grenades, nests and spores count
  • Spore Spotter – Destroy Blinding Spores before they attach (Yellow buds that are often on walls & ceilings)

Shooting Drills

  • Calculated Kill – Score 4 kills in 2 seconds. Spores count, so just shoot a set of those
  • Opportunist – Kill or assist on Stunned targets (use stun grenades)
  • Lethal Challenge 2 – Get 20 kills or assists in a single mission

Stealth Variety

  • Get Around – Get a stealth kill in all three sections of a mission. Gun kills work fine
  • No Howls – Complete an objective without triggering a howl from an enemy
  • Muscle Memory – Take down enemies with melee stealth kills. Nests count

Sower Mitigation

  • Sower Vulnerability – Kill or assist a Sower with a Weak Point shot
  • Fancy Footing – Kill or Assist on a Sower before setting off any mines
  • Minesweeper – Destroy Sower mines without setting them off. Small red items on the floor, shoot to disable

Performance Check-In

  • Full Sweep – Complete 3 objectives and extract with a full squad (Doesn’t need to be three, just the same amount that started the mission)
  • Health Maintenance – Extract with at least 60% health after completing three objectives
  • Intel Target 3 – Earn 35,000 XP

The Chimera’s Motive

  • Why Does It Attack? (Automatically completes)

That’s all of the study objectives for San Francisco. Be sure to check out the next area with our Alaska Studies Guide.

Each Operator is similar to how they function in Rainbow Six Siege but the actual uses and deployments of their abilities differ as the approach to Extraction is very different to that of the core Siege gameplay loop.

There are different progression paths in Rainbow Six Extraction. You have an overall level and an Operator level, and also a Tech level. Your Operator Levels give Experience Points to your overall level and your overall level influences your tech. As you progress through the game you will level up your overall level, called Development Milestones, which in turn will unlock the higher tiers of the tech tree. You then need to spend REACT Tech Tokens to unlock the tech.

Scan through the different levels and you will see REACT Tokens as a reward. These are the tokens you need. For example, you get REACT Tokens for tech at levels 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 etc. You can always check this scale for the next REACT Token reward.

Development Milestones is progression that unlocks new operators and Hot-Zones. This guide on How To Increase Development Milestones In Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction will tell you how you can increase your Development Milestone Rank so you can level up fast, unlock new content, and get to taking down the infection.

There are three main areas of progress in Rainbow Six Extraction. Operator, Tech, and Development. Operators earn experience points through completing missions, unlocking new tech and ability upgrades. While Development Milestones are increased by completing very specific objectives laid out for each of the Hot-Zones you will encounter. The first and only area you have access to at the start of the game is New York, so you need to complete the New York Studies Objectives.

How To Increase Development Milestones

How To Increase Development Milestones
From the main menu go to Progression and you can see your current Development Milestone level. Each new level unlocks new advancements, that you can find on this screen. If you want to increase your Development Milestone level, head to the Play tab.

From the Play Tab, choose any Hot-Zone. New York is the only one unlocked by default. Don’t hit Quick Play or choose a Hot-Zone, instead select Studies. Here you can view all of the objectives for current, future, and past Development Milestone levels. You need to complete each individual objective. For example, the first set of Studies for New York City are called Intro to Nests, with the following objective: Look Up (Ping Nests on walls or ceilings), Nest Popper (Kill Nests), and Nest Removal (Kill Dormant Nests). Each objective rewards you with Development Milestones experience points. Continue to follow these objectives as you progress to rank up fast.

  • Development Milestones unlock new Operators and Hot-Zones as well as other items
  • To increase your Development Milestone level you need to participate in Studies
  • From any Hot-Zone menu select the Studies screen to view current objectives
  • Each completed objective earns you Development Milestone points

You also earn Development Milestone Experience Points for Experience Points earned by your Operators. However, if one goes MIA you will lose a portion of their overall experience points, reducing your Development Milestone by the corresponding amount. Successfully rescuing them returns all experience but if you fail, only a portion is returned.

Increasing your Tech Level unlocks a lot of powerful upgrades in the new Tom Clancy game. This guide on How To Get More REACT Tech Tokens In Rainbow Six Extraction explains how to get more Tech Tokens and how you can advance your tech level to unlock more upgrades later in the game.

An early Studies Objective needs you to Ping Nests on walls and ceilings. This guide on How To Ping Nests In Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction will tell you how to use the pinging feature as it’s both incredibly useful to your allies and also involved in multiple objectives needed to increase your Development Milestones.

The first Hot-Zone you can enter is New York. As with all Hot-Zones, New York Studies Objectives must be completed if you want to level up your account and unlock more Operators and other items to use. One such objective in New York tasks you with Pinging Nests that are either on walls or ceilings, nest that would otherwise be out of reach and could not be destroyed unless you use a ranged weapon.

How To Ping Nests In Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction

The Pinging feature is a very useful mechanic and one you should get used to use. To Ping anything you simply press “Up” on the D-Pad. Pinging a target will immediately alert your allies to your ping. You can ping resources and ammo chests for your allies to grab, you can highlight certain enemies, request your team to extract. It’s a very useful feature and allows you to quickly and safely convey vital information to your squad.

This particular objective requires you to use the Ping feature to highlight nests. To Ping an enemy simply ensure your reticle is targeting the enemy and then press the Ping button. This will Ping the target, showing it on your squads heads up display, while simultaneously playing an audio file to alert them of what you have pinged.

For this objective the nests need to be out of melee reach, walls or ceilings. They are easy to find. Every mission is filled with nests so simply run around and ping them until you have enough to complete the mission.

A staple part of Siege and a vital part of the new Tom Clancy game also. This guide on How To Aim & Lean Around Corners In Rainbow Six Extraction will walk you through the two techniques you can use to get an edge over your enemies as you peer around corners for maximum sight with minimal exposure.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Siege is a very different game to Rainbow Six Extraction. However, those familiar with the controls and shooting mechanics of Siege will immediately feel at home in Extraction. Finding that perfect spot, aiming at your enemy through the smallest of holes, peering around the corner to get the perfect shot. Extraction is a bit more fluid and active than Siege but the core aspects of shooting enemies remains much in the same.

How To Aim & Lean Around Corners In Rainbow Six Extraction

There’s no cover system in Rainbow Six Extraction, so you don’t need to be against a hard surface or any particular cover in order to use the peek ability. You simply need to press either L3 or R3, clicking the left or right stick in, to peer the appropriate direction whilst you are aiming. So you hold aim and then press sprint to peek left or melee to peek right. It only works if you are already aiming down the sights.

For example, if you click in the left stick your character will peer around the corner to the left. If you click the right stick, the character will lean slightly to the right and you get a better vantage point in that direction instead. It’s a simple feature but one easily missed if you’re not used to pressing down the thumb sticks.

And that’s how you lean around corners in Rainbow Six Extraction.

This list of must know tips & tricks for Rainbow Six Extraction covers everything from earning the most amount of experience points possible, to carefully choosing your team of Operators based on the objectives ahead.

Be sure to check out our in-depth guide for the best Operators for every objective.

EXP Boosting

EXP Boosting
Your overall account level controls when you unlock new Operators, new regions, and new technology trees, as such you will want to level as fast as possible. It’s worth noting that difficulty plays a huge role in how you are rewarded. If you complete all three objectives within a mission on easy, you will earn less experience points than you would for completing two objectives on the next difficulty up.

You earn experience points based on total score. To increase your score utilize stealth kills and tech. Stealth killing nests with a takedown will net you far more experience than just shooting them. Likewise, using grenades and Operator abilities effectively, such as scanning, earns even more experience points.

Know When To Quit

Know When To Quit
Certain objectives in the game are much harder than others. For example, Triangulate just requires you to access a few consoles to complete an objective. Whereas Hunt needs you to kill several Elite enemies. Gauging what tasks lay ahead is a vital component of the strategic layer in Extraction. Communicate with your squad mates, see what Operators you are using to focus on each objective, and decide ahead of time how bad things will get before you want to extract. You get a 90% bonus to experience points for successfully extracting, so it’s something to really consider before loading into the next Sub-Zone.

Blinding Spore Removal

Blinding Spore Removal
Blinding Spores are these irritating little yellow spores that the developers hide in all sorts of inconvenient places. When an Operator gets too close the spores attach themselves and will eventually explode, causing small amounts of damage and making the Operator blind. You have a few moments before they explode however, and that’s where this tip comes in. Your squad mates can shoot the spores off your body before they explode, friendly fire isn’t a problem on lower difficulty levels. Alternatively, you can use stun grenades, frag grenades, similar items on yourself to clear the spores.

Do Not Flee, Do Not Bunker Down

Do Not Flee, Do Not Bunker Down
Nests are the backbone of the Archaen forces in Rainbow Six Extraction. When an enemy is alerted and they howl, they immediately awaken all nearby dormant nests. These nests will then begin spawning enemies in rapid succession. If you alert enemy forces don’t flee and don’t sit in a corner expecting the onslaught to stop, it won’t. Instead, communicate with your allies and launch a coordinated assault on all nearby nests so you can return to stealth status and continue with the mission.

Both Silenced And Non Silenced Weapons Are Key

Both Silenced And Non Silenced Weapons Are Key
Many of the games objectives rely on stealth, but some do not. Silenced weapons are fantastic for picking off enemies one by one, dwindling down the enemy force. However, Rainbow Six Extraction is not as simple as applying the stealth brush to every situation. Some of the more powerful Archaens will resist much of the damage dealt by silenced weapons. Switching to regular firearms or shotguns can knock these enemies down, making them ripe for the kill. It doesn’t hurt to have a silenced weapon alongside a stronger weapon for when stealth breaks down. More often than not, a regular weapon will deal twice as much damage as a silenced weapon.

Intel Is Vital To Your Success

Intel Is Vital To Your Success
Much like Siege, Extraction is very heavily centered around gathering intel before charging head first into a situation. Items like Scan Grenades or XR Recon Drone are fantastic tools. They allow you to find objectives quicker, spot nests, locate stealth enemies, you will want to ensure that at least one Operator brings the drone into every mission. Focus on your tech tree and unlock more tech points to get the XR Recon Drone, a drone that scans all targets automatically.

Managing Your Roster Is Important

Managing Your Roster Is Important
Between losing squad members to MIA to injuries, there’s a good chance your roster is going to take some serious damage as time goes on. It’s important to understand that you cannot heal health in Extraction. Any healing, whether that be from finding a Medkit to an Operators ability like Doc, give you temporary HP that drains slowly over time. The core health of the Operator will never increase. As such, if you take too much damage in a mission, your Operator will be injured.

You then need to heal them before you can continue. The higher the score you get on a mission, the more health that is restored to your Operators. If you’re low on team members, don’t be afraid to drop the difficulty down a few notches to heal your team back to full.

Approaching each mission with the correct toolset is vital if you want to win. This guide on The Best Operators For Each Objective In Rainbow Six Extraction will list all of the different missions objectives throughout the entire game and breakdown the best Operator for each one.

Every mission in the new Tom Clancy game has three different objectives you can complete. The order and types of objectives are randomized each time you play. Certain objectives will be much easier to complete if you approach with the correct tools and Operator. Below is a list of every objective in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction as well as tips and tricks on how to complete each objective, the best equipment to take, and the best Operator for the job. This is assuming you have unlocked all Operators but if you haven’t, don’t worry, it doesn’t take long.

The Best Operators For Each Objective In Rainbow Six Extraction

The list of objectives is accompanied by a few bits of information. Firstly, you’ll see a breakdown of the mission objective itself before highlighting the different equipment and best Operator to bring. There is also a difficulty setting assigned to each objective but this is entirely subjective and varies greatly depending on player ability, squad size, and the various random elements that come into play for each objective.

Specimen

Specimen
Probably the easiest of all objectives. You need to locate a unique elite enemy somewhere on the level. Once located, attack the enemy so you have its attention and then run to the helicopter evac point. There’s a control panel you have to interact with that sets the trap, but it takes a few seconds to activate, so make sure you activate it early. Once the creature reaches the location while the trap is active, it is immediately trapped and the objective is complete.

Alibi is very effective in this particular objective because she has a high movement speed. Her ability, Prisma, can also work as a very effective safety net should you attract additional unwanted attention while running from the specimen. Any Operator works well but Alibi’s speed and her ability make her a prime choice for both running from the specimen and distracting additional enemies.

Scan Grenades and the Advanced Drone both aid with locating the Specimen quickly and safely. While the React Laser can help clear a path if the Sprawl is a particular problem.

Difficulty: Easy
Best Operator: Alibi
Best Equipment: Scan Grenades, Advanced Drone, React Laser

Nest Tracking

Nest Tracking
This objective is very easy if you can avoid howling enemies. You need to approach inactive nests and interact with the appropriate button to place a tracker into the nest. It works on nests on floors, walls, and ceilings, assuming they are within jumping range. The real threat here is alerting enemies that howl, causing the nests to become active. If you destroy too many nests, there will not be enough nests left to complete the mission. Stealth is paramount in this objective.

The best Operator for this task in Vigil. He has good speed and his ability, Erc-8 Distruptor, allows him to immediately become invisible for a short time. This will let you avoid large rooms of enemies without the risk of getting caught, so you have enough time to clear the nests and move on.

As you really want to avoid alerting enemies. You want to bring Scan Grenades or an Advanced Drone to locate all of the nests as safely as possible. Stun Grenades are fantastic because if you hit an alerted enemy, it will stop them from howling and activating nests. Smoke Grenades are a good alternative for getting into an area, popping a nest, and retreating before enemies discover you.

Difficulty: Easy
Best Operator: Vigil
Best Equipment: Scan Grenades, Advanced Drone, Stun Grenades, Smoke Grenades

Biopsy

Biopsy
This objective can be challenging depending on the type of Archaen that have been selected for study. To complete this mission you need to do melee takedowns on the correct targets to collect samples using your REACT knife melee attack. If the enemy is killed by any other means, you will fail the objective. The focus of this mission is to locate the enemy, clear out nearby reinforcements, and approach it silently.

There’s a high chance you will encounter problems on these missions. It is vital that you bring equipment with you that will let you takedown an enemy even if discovered. It doesn’t have to be pretty but it needs to be done.

The best Operator for this task is Lion. His ability, EE-One-D Drone detects all moving enemies in a large area. This allows you to directly track your targets location and wait for the perfect time to strike.

You want to bring Stun Grenades so you can still takedown the target even if it discovers your location. Advanced Drones will let you spot nests in the target area easily, and Scan Grenades are a good alternative if you’re using another Operator.

Difficulty: Medium
Best Operator: Lion, Vigil (Stealth allows for easy takedowns)
Best Equipment: Scan Grenades, Advanced Drone, Stun Grenades

Sabotage

Sabotage
One of the few mission objectives where stealth takes a back seat to pure brute force. For Sabotage you need to locate two towers and plant explosives on both towers. Once explosives have been place, waves of Archaens will attack you for approximately 90 seconds. During this time they will attempt to destroy the bombs placed on the towers. You need to fend them off until they detonate. Both towers are usually close together, allowing you to get crossing fields of fire, being able to defend both towers from a single location. You will want to utilize barriers and barricades to make it difficult to reach one of the towers, encouraging enemies to attack the other.

The best Operator for this particular task is Tachanka. He has decent speed and armor but more importantly, he brings a Mounted LMG as his special ability and a powerful shotgun as his weapon. The Mounted LMG is highly accurate and does a lot of damage. Combined with careful equipment placement, Tachanka can completely lock down areas with ease.

This mission is about pure power. Claymores are a huge help, completely shutting off avenues of advancement for the enemy. Frag Grenades are fantastic for clearing a group of enemies from a tower, Stun Grenades work the same in a pinch.

Difficulty: Medium
Best Operator: Tachanka
Best Equipment: Claymores, Frag Grenades, Stun Grenades

Triangulation

Triangulation
Scattered around the map are three laptops that you must discover and then activate in sequence. You cannot get the sequence wrong. Laptop B only becomes accessible once you have activated Laptop A. They are usually in close proximity and you only have 60 seconds to activate all three laptops once you have activated the first. Scouting is important here as you want to locate all three laptops as quickly and easily as possible.

Sledge is one of the best operators for this mission. His ability, Tactical Hammer, allows him to create paths through destructible walls so you can either reach all three laptops in quick succession, or take shortcuts avoiding large numbers of enemies.

The best equipment for this mission is scouting gear. Scan Grenades and Advanced Drones to locate the devices, Smoke Grenades can help you avoid enemies if needed.

Difficulty: Easy
Best Operator: Sledge
Best Equipment: Scan Grenades, Advanced Drone, Smoke Grenades

Serial Scan

Serial Scan
This is another mission where stealth becomes less important, and it’s one of the hardest objectives in the game. You must first locate a special device and then use it to scan several three different regions on the map. Once you have the device and step a single foot into one of the areas, Archaen waves will begin attacking. This is similar to Sabotage but with one vital difference, you can’t leave the area. You need to remain in a very small space for the duration for the objective to complete.

Gridlock is by far the most suited Operator for this role. Her ability, Trax Stingers, is a trap that you can place that both damages and slows enemies. As you’ll be getting attacked from multiple sides, these traps can buy you a vital few seconds to react and take enemies down

Claymores work great for area control. Glue Grenades can help slow an onslaught, giving you some time to reload or take down a few enemies, and Arc Mines are a great tool to dispatch of a large group of enemies quickly.

Difficulty: Hard
Best Operator: Gridlock
Best Equipment: Claymores, Glue Grenades, Arc Mine

Hunt

Hunt
Hunt requires you to find a number of allies of a particularly powerful Archaen and kill them, bringing out their boss before taking it down. You usually need to take down several targets before the elite will spawn but once it spawns, it tends to head straight for your position. There is a very high chance during this mission that you will be discovered so you want to take down as many nests as possible before drawing out the final bad guy.

Due to the conflict driven nature of this mission, we’ve found Finka to be the best suited Operator. Her ability, Adrenal Surge, instantly boosts team mates HP for a few moments and can also revive any downed team mates instantly. This is a fantastic fail safe if the mission gets a little hairy.

As always, the Advanced Drone or any scanning device will greatly increase your chance of success as you can locate the allies without putting yourself at risk. Body armor helps alleviate some of the damage should you get caught, and the revive kit on top of Finka’s support makes it very difficult to fail this mission.

Difficulty: Medium
Best Operator: Finka
Best Equipment: Advanced Drone, Body Armor, Revive Kit

Rescue

Rescue
Rescue has you seek out a VIP that has been taken captive somewhere on the map. The VIP is usually in a room surrounded by a number of strong and powerful enemies. The real risk of this mission is that single room. If any of the enemies in the immediate vicinity spot you or your squad, they will immediately begin attacking the VIP. Be careful of exploding enemies, if you blow them up the gas can all but kill a VIP in a single hit.

The best Operator for this mission is Fuze. His ability, Cluster Charge, lets you attach a cluster device to a destructible surface and then activate it to launch a series of cluster grenades into the room. You won’t damage the VIP unless on the hardest difficulty, so this will typically clear the room of enemies without incident.

Alternatively, you can have your squad mates throw in some Stun or Paralysis Grenades so you can go inside and takedown the enemies one by one.

Difficulty: Medium
Best Operator: Fuze
Best Equipment: Advanced Drone, Stun Grenades, Paralysis Grenade

Decontamination

Decontamination
Decontamination is one of the hardest objectives in the game, if you do not go in prepared. You need to find 10 special nests, green unlike the normal red ones, and destroy them all. As soon as you destroy the first nest, every other nest becomes active and begins spawning enemies. With 10 different nests, you can get overwhelmed really quickly. You’ll want to locate each of the 10 nests and position your squad to take out as many nests as quickly as possible. Have one member in a room with 4, another in a room with 3, etc. Place your squad so each member can take down enough nests to reach the 10 quickly.

The best Operator for this task is Pulse. His ability, Cardiac Sensor allows him to detect VIPs, MIAs, and Nests through walls. This gives your squad the perfect intel to locate all nests and position yourselves correctly.

Claymores are the real VIP here. Before attacking the first nest, place a claymore near each of the nests on ground level. As the enemy spawns from the nest, the claymore will destroy it and take out the nest as well. Be careful of the poisonous gas the final nest emits after gathering the intel.

Difficulty: Hard
Best Operator: Pulse
Best Equipment: Claymore, Scan Grenades, Revive Kit

Shutdown

Shutdown
Shutdown can be incredibly difficult if you get caught. You need to grab multiple canisters, one per player, from the helicopter evac point and then carry the canisters to a location to install into an Archaen tower to destroy its roots. While the tower is active any nest you destroy will respawn after a few moments. This means that if you are caught by a howling enemy, it can very quickly descend into a seemingly endless onslaught of spawning enemies. You can only use your secondary weapon while carrying a capsule and cannot use equipment.

This mission is purely about stealth, you want to avoid getting caught at all costs. However, a strong support Operator like Rook or Doc can greatly increase your chances of success if you are caught. Additional health or armor will let you take a couple of extra hits as you pick up and drop the capsule to deal with enemies.

Recon Vaper Device allows you to keep your scouted path clear of enemies and the React Laser helps avoid the slow caused by the Sprawl.

Difficulty: Hard
Best Operator: Rook/Doc
Best Equipment: Recon Vaper Device, Scan Grenades, React Laser

MIA Rescue

MIA Rescue
Missing In Action occurs when you fail to extract from a mission. Your Operator is unavailable for selection until they are rescued. When you attempt an MIA mission you will find your Operator encased in a cocoon like structure with several tendrils trailing off it. These tendrils lead to nest-like objects. When you attempt to free the Operator the nests send pulses down the tendrils. When a pulse reaches the Operator, the cocoon structure will attempt to consume it. You must destroy all of the nest-like objects to stop the pulses to free the Operator.

This is easy with two people but can be very hard alone. Jager is the perfect Operator for this task as his ability, Active Defense

Difficulty: Easy to Hard
Best Operator: Jager
Best Equipment: Scan Grenade,
